June 20, 2005 PHILADELPHIA - Recent University of Dayton graduate Rob Altenau was named the Atlantic 10 male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Monday in voting conducted among the Conference's directors of athletics. Fellow tennis player Lauren Clary of Xavier garnered the award on the women's side. Altenau was also one of 80 Flyers named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, which was also released Monday. Altenau ended his collegiate career with a 14-14 singles record and 15-11 doubles mark in 2004-05. The senior from North Bend, OH, helped lead the Flyers to a second-place finish at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship - the team's best-ever finish in the event. For his efforts, Altenau was named to the A-10 All-Conference first-team for the second time. Off the court, Altenau, a biology major, graduated Summa Cum Laude and will begin attending the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in August. He is a two-time Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year in men's tennis and was named to the second-team at-large Academic All-America team in 2005. In May he was awarded an Atlantic 10 postgraduate scholarship and he is currently a finalist for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He was a member of Dayton's Honors Program/Presidential Scholarship and the Golden Key International Honor Society. Altenau was a UD Berry Scholar and the recipient of the 2005 Brother Vincent Wottle Award for service to campus ministry. He also earned the John J. Comer Ecological Undergraduate Research Award, presented to the biology major who best demonstrates research excellence in ecology. |
